Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): scotts mower, spec numbers, kohler engine

I just got a Scott mower with a 17.5 hp kohler engine. it ran when I first looked at it, but then another person tried to start it the next day but it would only crank, since then i have tried replacing the spark plug, and putting in a new fuel filter and fresh fuel, i have checked all the wires and connectors. it also backfires through the exhaust and back through the carburetor. any help would be much appreciated

Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. It can be Several Things Depending on the Model Numbers. Thanks.
