Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan 42 riding mower - deck does not engage, spring length, couple inches

Poulan 42" riding mower - deck does not engage
When I use the lever to engage the mower, it is very easy to push up and the blades never engage.  In the past, the last couple inches was harder to push up as the mower engages.  There is a cable that connects to the lever and on the deck the cable is connected to a spring that appears to apply the tension needed to engage the mower.  I appears that either the spring or cable has stretched because the lever does not catch the end of the cable until it is almost at the top of the engage position.  Is there a way to adjust the cable or spring length?
