Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD Lawn Tractor, mtd lawn tractor, battery cables

Question
I have a 1999 MTD lawn tractor with 20HP B&S. After mowing engine turns over very slowing and will not start. After charging battery, it will start, however after using will not start again. I have replaced fuse and replaced starter due to another issue. I have removed battery cables and cleaned. I have replaced battery with new one. After about two weeks problem returns. I do not have voltmeter to test electrical, however could purchase one.

Thanks

Answer
I would purchase an inexpensive multimeter.  Harbor Freight and other discount stores sell them for less than $10.00

The Briggs website provides a lot of helpful answers.

Read through the FAQ's to learn about the electrical system.  Once you have a multimeter, you begin checking the charging system.  It is possible the battery is not being charged or another component is draining the battery.

First, check for 12 to 13 volts DC with the engine running full speed.  Let me kwow what you find.
