Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1542 sabre by john deere, engine model type, float bowl

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1542 sabre that refuses to start.  I charge the battery, clean the plug, change the oil, change the fuel and air filter and still very hard to start.  I remove the spark plug and it turns over just fine.  I am stumped.  Regards, Creighton

ANSWER: Do you have spark?  If you remove the air filter and spray starting fluid in the air box will the engine start?
What is the engine model, type and code number on the engine?
Let me know.

QUESTION: Yes I do have spark.  If you spray starting fluid in the air box that will usually get the engine started.  The model is a 1542G. The model # on the engine is 28N707.  Type # 1135-E1.  Code # 980226ZD

Answer
If it starts or trys to start with starting fluid then it is fairly safe to say the ignition, compression and timing are fine.  This leaves the fuel system.

Have you drained the fuel from the carburetor by removing the carburetor float bowl nut located on the bottom of the carb?
Let me know.
