i want to know if the motor is a stright shaft or is it point down? because i was wondering if can make a go kart for under $100 dollars! instead of a 1,000?something for cheap and as a hobbie to get me busy?number info on toro 524 is 38040 & 9001557

Answer
Hello John:

This is a Horizontal Shaft Engine like the Ones Used on Go-Karts. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/default.cfm and Select Start Parts Viewer. Now Enter the Model Numbers. Now Select View Assembly Drawings. For Future Reference, If the Crankshaft Sets Straight Up and Down During Operation it is a Vertical Shaft Engine and if the Crankshaft Sets Flat During Operation, it is a Horizontal Shaft Engine. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
