Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Clicking noise., jumper cable, david answer

Question
QUESTION: I have a Murray mower model# 42514x8A. While mowing the lawn the motor just stopped running. When I tried to restart it it would not turn over. When I tried to start it today all I got was a clicking noise. Could this be the solenoid?
Thank you, David

ANSWER: Hello David:

This Could be a Weak Battery, Bad Solenoid or a Locked Up/Seized Engine. From your Description, I Suggest you Check the Battery First. If the Engine has a Carburetor Solenoid and the Stator is Not Charging the Batter, then when the Battery gets too Low, then Solenoid Shuts Off the Gas to the Carburetor Jet and the Engine Quits. According to the Breakdown, this Engine Does have an Afterfire/Anti-Diesel Solenoid. **To Check the Solenoid and Starter, Once you are Sure the Battery is Fully Charged/New, then Use your Jumper Cable Set and Attach the Positive Lead Onto the Positive Post of the Battery (make sure the Battery is Fully Charged or is a New Battery). Now Firmly Touch the Large Post on the Starter. If the Starter Does Not Turn and you can turn the Engine by Hand, then the Starter is Bad. If the Starter Turns the Engine Properly, Then Check the Solenoid. Firmly Touch the Small Post at the Base of the Solenoid that has the Ign Wire Attached to it. If The Starter Does Not Turn and the Solenoid Clicks, Then the Solenoid is Bad.** Go to this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Murray) and Enter the Model Numbers (42514X8A). Then Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Then Select the Section of the Unit you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. QUESTION: John,
I charged the battery and the mower started right up. This is the second time I've charged the battery in 6 months. Could a bad battery be stopping the mower from running?
Thanks, David

Answer
Hello Again David:

Yes a Bad/Weak Battery will Prevent the Newer Engines from Running and if the Stator/Alternator is Not Charging Properly, the Engine Will Shut Off when the Battery Voltage Becomes Less than 10.5VDC - 11.0VDC. There is an Electric Solenoid in the Carburetor that Shuts Off the Gas Flow to the Carburetor Jet when the Ign Switch is Turned Off or the Voltage Becomes too Low to Keep the Solenoid Engerized. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
