Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere - STX38, interlock switches, starter switch

Question
Hi, I have a J.D. STX38 Lawn Tracker older model -1992 +/- with a 17 horse Koler.   I've been having problems with it starting - will not engage the starter when using the key.  Turn the Key and nothing.  I've changed the saliniod (SP?) use juppers to the Starter and it turns.....   Could the PTO have anything to do with this ?  Is there any better way of checking / trouble shutting the problem...  IThe machine is in really good shape - It was my fathers so it has value to me.

Answer
You have an electrical problem of sorts, it could be as simple as a burnt out fuse or one of the interlock switches are faulty.  You need to isolate every switch and test it for continuity.  In one position it will have continuity, the other it will not.  You will find a switch near the brake/clutch, seat, transmission lever(has to be in neutral)and PTO activation.

It could be a bad starter switch too.  These are the areas i would look.  I know electrical problems can be frustrating, but its very rewarding when you find the root cause of the problem.
