Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Grinding sound coming from new snow blower, drive shaft, snow thrower

Question
Hello Mr. Bridgers Sr.,

My Husband and I recently (Oct./Nov. 2007) purchased a brand new compact series 300 MTD 2 stage snow blower.  Everything seemed to be working great until we attempted to blow some snow during our last snowfall when it started to make a grinding sound.  When we engage the auger and drive the whole machine stops.  So we purchased and replaced both the drive and auger belts thinking that would resolve the problem.  It did not.  We checked the auger bolts and pins, both ok.  We think the grinding sound is coming from the auger drive shaft.  The drive shaft doesn't move.  We have no idea what this could be and why this happend to our new snow thrower. We sure appreciated this new snow blower as shoveling was getting a little old.  Tomorrow we are suppose to be getting 2-4 inches and another 2-6 inches overnight of snow.  Looks like we'll be shoveling.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Sincerely,

Kevin & Nancy

Answer
Hello Nancy:

Bad News. Either Return the Unit or have it Repaired Under Warranty at your Nearest MTD Dealer. The Grinding is Most Likely a Bad Bearing or Gear in the Gear Box. This Happens from Time to Time, so Do Not be to Upset. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
