Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): carburetor cleaning, adjustment screws, air mixture

Question
Dear Mr. Bridgers,

Thank you for all of your help.  I was able to go to the Site Addy and found the Breakdown/IPL for my engine.

The drawing of the choke system shows a "kit idle mixture" and a "kit-idle speed".  Can you please tell me what these  look like.  These sound like they might be the adjustment screws that you told me to remove and clean.  I ask because I still do not see and adjustment screws on the carburetor body.

I was able to purchase the carburetor gasket kit for my engine.  I still need to purchase the gallon of gunk.  NAPA sells a gallon for $50.00   Should this be that expensive?  Can I use it over?  Does it have much of a shelf life?

Thank you, again, for your help and patience.

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Hi Rich:

The "Kit - Idle Mixture" is the Idle Air Mixture Adjustment Screw. The "Kit - Idle Speed" is the Idle Speed Adjustment Screw. The Idle Air Screw is Turned In Until Seated (Snug, Do Not Jam) and then Turned Out 1 1/2 Turns. In Case I Din Not Include the Air Mixture Setting Procedure, I have Included them in this E-Mail. Since this Carburetor Does Not have the Main (Full Throttle) Air Mixture Screw, Just Set the Idle Air as Instructed. Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:  ****Turn the Idle Air and Main Air Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Holding the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine. Turn the Main Air Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.**** The Carburetor Cleaner has a Long Shelf Life. I have a Heavy Plastic Container that the Cleaner is Stored in. I Do Not Trust the Metal Can Not to Rust and Allow the Cleaner to Leak Out. The Last Time I Purchased the Carburetor Cleaner its Cost was 37.00us @ Gallon. That was 2 Years Ago. I Just Called and the Price is Now 44.00us @ Gallon. I Do Recieve a Discount, so the 50.00us should be Close to the Actual Retail Cost. You are Very Welcome to Any Assistance I can Give and Thank you for Using All Experts. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
