Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD logsplitter starting problem, line tank, hp engine

Question
Hi Ben.
I have an MTD 20 ton log splitter with a Tecumseh 6.0 hp engine. It's always been a bitchy starter. Now, I can get it to run...sort of...with strater fluid. New fuel, lines cleaned, new plug, etc.It seems like the thing will catch then dies after about 12 primes. Eventually, it will run but only on 'choke.' Carburetor?

Make sure that the fuel is fresh & the fuel line is not restricted then I would check for an air leak somewhere causing the carb not to be able to pump fuel, or maybe a nicked flywheel key, etc. If a shot of starting fluid cures it for a second or two then the carb area is where the trouble is.
Also sounds like the main jet is still plugged from your description. Sometimes it takes a couple cleaning attempts to remove all the dirt from the passageways. I would loosen the bowl nut as soon as it dies, to see if there is fuel in the bowl or not.
Then check the float needle/seat, fuel line & tank outlet for blockage.
