Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 18.5 Briggs engine mod. # 31Q777 uses oil, engine mod, service bulletins

Question
Ben,
I have a Briggs engine mod.# 31Q777 type 0298E1 code 0403042E.  The problem i am having is that since it was new it blows oil out of the exhaust if you fill the crankcase to the proper level on the dipstick, the oil will blow out until it is just below the add mark.  The engine caught on fire a couple of months ago, burned up the carb. housing and cover and the top cover for the flywheel.  i have replaced most of the burned up parts but would like to know if you have heard of this problem before with this engine.  I have no indication of oil leaking from any  of the seals.

We have no Service Bulletins on this engine. The problem may be you are over filling the engine make sure that you have the correct dip stick, this engine has a oil slinger to place oil on the crank, bearings etc etc.You should bring this engine to a service dealer and explain the problems since it was new you may be able to get it fixed under warranty as this is unusual for the engine to catch fire, the dip stick may be the wrong one.
