Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Charging System, sears craftsman, briggs and stratton

Question
I have purchased a used Sears Craftsman GT18. It has a Briggs and Stratton Engine (twin vertical) that produces 18hp at 3600rpms. it is 694cc.

The model number is 502602181 or maybe 502602180. I belive the unit was made by Murray sometime in 1982 or 1983. The date code is 3342 (1983 day 342??)

I believe the Sears model number for a very similar unit is 502253760.

My question relates to the charging system. I have replaced the old dead battery with a new charged battery. The tractor started fine for a few uses. Now I must Boost the battery to allow it to start.

There is a wire that leaves the front right of the engine, I believe this is from the magneto.

There are 2 other wires that leave the front left of the engine. I believe these wires are for the headlights.

Please advise how to locate the problem with a meter, what the readings should be, and if a regulator or other component is required to prevent overcharging.

By the way, how is overcharging prevented anyway?

Answer
Hello Scott:

The Numbers you Sent me are Sears Model Numbers. However, these Numbers Do Not Show Up in the Mictofiche or Online. I can Assist you if you Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Also, One Wire from Under the Blower Housing should be the Engine Shut Off Wire that goes to the Coil/Ign Module/Point Set. The 2 Wires should be the Charging System. One Wire is for the Headlights and the Other is for Battery Charging. The Engine Model Numbers will Assist me in Assisting you. Thanks.
