Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): weedwacker keeps shutting off, gumout, bad shape

QUESTION: my neighbor gave me a weedeater that he couldnt get started i checked sparkplug it was fine poured gas in carb and fired up for about 10 seconds then shutoff .i then took the carb off took the gaskets and diaphram out sprayed well with gumout and used the compressor to blow it out.now it fires up right away runs on its own for about a minute goes into a high idle then shuts off

You need to adjust the carb at high speed have the throttle pushed in and while it is running adjust the high speed till it starts to run smooth.

QUESTION: I did that today and it ran a little longer say 5minutes or so then shut off.I am thinking that the carb might need a gasket and diaphram kit because i wound the screw all the way in and it didnt shut off.The other screw on the carb has a black plastic cover on it and doesnt move much.The gasket between the carb and motor is in pretty bad shape.Any help would be appreciated

Yes i would rebuild the carburetor they are not that hard to do. Make sure you either take some pictures as you take it apart so when you reinstall it you know where everything goes. If you need a tech sheet on the carb I can get you one I will need the carb Name The model # and so on. We also carry Rebuild kits for most small carbs.
