Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): air cleaner?, particals, air cleaner

I'm building a Go-Kart and was looking at a used lawn mower for the engine. But the owner says it needs an air cleaner, is this part needed? And if so, how much would one cost.

The Air Cleaner is Used to Filter the Air that Enters the Cylinder and Prevents this Air from Carrying Dust and Dirt Particals Into the Cylinder and Damage it.
