ANSWER: Hello Chase:

1- Tecumseh Engine: From your Description, it Sounds like you have the Piston Timing Correct. Did you Reseat the Valves and Reset the Valve Clearance? What is the Engine Doing that Makes you Think the Timing is Not Correct? Did you Deglaze the Cylinder when you Rebuilt this Engine? Is the Flywheel Key Damaged? Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf. 2- Briggs Engine: Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: hey thanks fo rthe help the timin gis correct i took off the head and checked it manually i didi reseat the valves and i lapped them. i am not sure whta deglazing the cylinder means but i honed it. i have a massive spark so that isnt the problem neither is the carburator becaus ei just completly rebuilt it and it works perfect on another engine i have. so where does that leave me? i will have the briggs numbers tomorrw

Answer
Hello Chase:

When you Lapped the Valves, Did you Reset the Valve Clearance Between the Valve Stem and the Tappet? If No, then the Valve Clearance is to Close and the Valves are Not Seating Properly and Allowing the Engine to Backfire. On this Model Engine the Valve Stem Has to be CAREFULLY Ground Down Until the Proper Clearance is Achieved. The Intake Clearance is .003in - .005in and the Exhaust is .011in - .013in. on an Engine with a Point Set Under the Flywheel. If the Engine has Electronic Ign, then the Clearances are; Intake .003in - .005in and the Exhaust is .007in - .009in. The Engine is Set at TDC on the Compression Stroke to Get the Correct Clearance. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
