Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 20 hp MTD Fuse under middle plate shorting out, customer service phone number, rear discharge

Question
First, I'll let you know what I got.  (Besides a headache)  It's a MTD 20hp Techumseh engine, 6spd, 42" cut.  TVT691  Don't know what else there is.  Sorry.  :(

Hello, I have quite a number of problems I'm sure.  We'll start with the biggest and most important.  I originally couldn't start the tractor or even get power to the starter.  I started tracing wires, and came up with a red wire right next to the starter that was completely burned through.  I jumped it for giggles, and still no volts.  Tracing further back, I came to the fuse under that horizontal panel below the steering wheel, guess what, it too was melted.  New fuse, and jumped red wire, and we're kinda in business.  Jump starting the tractor from there, I'm good to go.  However, I keep blowing the fuse, and can't seem to keep the receptacle for that fuse from smoking.  I know there is a problem somewhere, I'm thinking the solenoid that is right next to the fuse, from the battery, but I'm not sure.

Any help, would be awesome.  Thanks.

Jeff

Answer
Hello Jeff:

From your Description it Sounds like the Stator/Alternator has Shorted Out. The Red Wire you Jumped, Sounds like the Stator Wire. Can you Locate and Send me the Model Numbers, Please. Generally the identification tag is on a part of the unit that, even after years of use, rarely needs replacement. For most of our power equipment, these tags are approximately 2" by 3" in size. They also have the MTD Products name, address and customer service phone number listed across the bottom. For hand held product, the tag is normally white and approximately 1" by 1/2" in size. Hand held i.d. tags are normally on an aluminum portion of the engine, somewhat set into the unit to protect the label from wear. (A bar code will also be on this tag.)
Riding mower tags are located on the underside of the seat.
For walk behind mowers this tag is found either on the deck or on the rear door of rear discharge units. Tiller model and serial tags are generally on the tine housing. The model and serial tags for two-stage snow throwers are located on the bottom of the main gear housing which is often called the belly pan, while single stage snow thrower tags are next to the key and primer. For other products like log splitters, chipper shredders and edgers, tags can be found on the frame or main housing. Does this Mower have a PTO Engaged Blade System. It can Also Cause this Problem. This is Unlikely the cause because you Stated you have Started the Engine by Replacing the Fuse and Jumpering the Stator? Wire. Bare with me and we can Get the Problem Corrected in a Few E-Mails. One Last Item; Never Jump Start a Small Engine from a Battery that is Being Charged by a Vehicles Alternator. USE JUST THE BATTERY. The Alternator is a Higher Output than a Small Engines and Usually Burns Out the Small Engines Stator/Alternator or Regulator when Jumped with the Vehicles Engine Running. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
