Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snowblower - tecumseh 8.5 hp, tecumseh engine, air gap

Question
My snowblower won't start. Do you know what the compression should be for a 8.5 hp Tecumseh engine? Mine just got measured at 60-lbs which seems low. If that is low do you know what that might indicate as the problem?

Answer
Dear Greg,

As far as the spec's for the actual compression [in lbs per sq. inch] I am not sure what the value is.  When you remove the spark plug and place your thumb over the hole, there should be enough compression to blow you thumb away from the hole.  Rather than the compression issue [if there is one], I will deal with the no-start condition.  If there is a spark, check flywheel for damaged or sheared key.  Set air gap on external coil.  Test for intermittent or weak spark.  Check electric starter or battery if applicable.
Replace spark plug if no spark.  Then if the engine still doesn't start but you are getting a spark, check for equipment problems - switches, wiring, controls.  Parasitic loads.
If no spark with new spark plug check for engine problem, shorts or grounds in wiring.

Hopefully this information might be useful to you.
