Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Model 60102 Type 0252-01 Code 82022508, head bolts, tank fuel

Question
Hi Eric,
I have an approx. 30yr old lawnmower with the B&S motor on it. Has been going fine, but just recently has started playing up. Syptoms - will only start when cold, and even then is not delivering full power. After less than a minute, it loses what power it has, and dies. Attempts to restart fail - it gives the impression of trying to start, but wont. Things tried; cleaned air filter, fuel tank, fuel pick up, inlet manifold assembly (jet set at 1.5-2 turns), checked throttle plate control rod/spring assembly, replaced spark plug. At hand pull has 50PSI compression.
My thoughts; HT lead/coil?
If this, how do I test it? Any special tools required to dissassemble and get to the coil? Can I replace just the HT lead?

Regards

Answer
Do you still have spark when it dies?  Try using starting fluid sprayed directly into the carburetor throat when it dies.  If it restarts, you can rule out any ignition problems which only leave fuel.
On those engines the carbs are prone to warping which will cause your problem.  You can remove the pickup tubes and use a flat file to check for warpage.  Run the file over the bottom of the carb in a couple of directions.  Any high spot will be shiny where the file remove material the the low spots will remain dull.

Also, check the head bolts and see if they are tight.
Let me know what you find.
