Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Power washer operating as it shouldnt?, briggs and stratton, air leaks

Question
Hi Howard:

I have a 3 year old power washer with a Briggs and Stratton engine (120000 Model Series). The situation is that whenever I start the engine it will operate with no problem. However, as soon as I move the choke to the “run” position, the engine immediately shuts off (even if the engine has warmed up). What is causing this and should I be concerned? As mentioned, I can operate as is but I don’t want to possibly do damage to the engine. Thanks.

Answer
Dear Kevin,

Based on the info you provided it sounds as if you have a carburetor problem.  Mostly, difficulties of this nature are the result of particles of dirt, varnish and/or other types of deposits. These unwanted substances block the fuel channels and air passages within the carb.  Gaskets and O-Rings also regularly are the cause of problems.   They are known to eventually shrink, which leads to fuel and air leaks which combine to cause poor engine efficiency.  If you determine that your problems are related to the carb, then you'll need to purchase a repair kit for your carb. This includes replacement gaskets and other essential parts.

Possibly gas was left in the machine for too long & has gummed up the carb.
I would suggest ruling this out prior to checking out other measures.
Sincerely,

Howard,
