Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 2004 sears craftsman snowthrower, sears craftsman, craftsman snowthrower

Question
I have a 2004 craftsman snowthrower. I has a B&S OHV 6HP intek engine. I have had a problem where you run the engine and get it hot it cuts off. It starts great cold no problem. Its a clean cut off so I think its a coil ignition problem. just like someone hits a switch and it cuts off. if you let it cool down 20min, starts up no problem. HELP!

Answer
Dear Brad,

Since the engine starts okay, I am thinking that it may not be a problem with your coil.  Though, you have to do some diagnostic testing to rule certain things out. Start by filling the tank at least 1/2 full.  Check to see if the Gas cap vent is clogged.  If clogged, a vacuum can eventually form in the tank & this stops fuel from reaching the carburetor. Next time it stops working, try removing the cap, then see if it starts okay [without the cap]. Of course don't use the machine running without a cap though. If this works then it could be the cap is clogged with debris.  If not, then I would check to make sure the carb is properly adjusted.  It seems that the machine heating up with use affects it ability to run.  Some times I've found that the lead to the spark plug is loose or the spark plug itself is dirty or faulty.  Check to make sure the GAP on the spark plug is set to specifications [likely to be .030".  Make sure the air filter is not clogged.  These would be some places to start to check.   Let me know.
