Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I have a Craftsman Garden Tractor and I have been trying to find out what type trans is in this thing. I have also been looking for some specs on wheel base.
The model number is 917.257720, it has a 18HP Kohler Magnum model MV18S.

Thank you for your time and help,
Darrell

ANSWER: Hello Darrell:

They Use Many Different Transaxles for this Model Mower. On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You. To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers in the Upper Left Search Box and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and Click Continue. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. QUESTION: Hi John,

Thank you for the link, I was able to look up parts diagrams. I have not been able to locate the trans tag. However the trans diagram looks like the trans in the Craftsman.
Could you tell me how I can get more speed out of this motor trans combo? I am thinking about making a ATV frame from scratch and using the motor/trans to power my creation. I will need to make upper & lower A arms for the front and I am thinking about using the trans with chain sprockets mounted on the axles and a solid axle with a large sprocket mounted on it and the axle will be mounted on a set of arms. This will allow me to use coil over shocks on front and rear for a better ride than a solid frame. However with the current pulley setup the top speed is 5.75mph and to use the trans and motor I need a way to increase the speed.

Do you have any suggestions??

Thank you for your time and help,
Darrell

ANSWER: Hello Again Darrell:

There are 2 Ways to Get a Higher Speed from the Transaxle. 1- The Pulley/Sprocket Size. You May have to Experiment a Little to Get the Pulley the Right Size to Get the Maximum Ground Speed and Not Lose the Pulling Power. To Do this Start with the Transaxle Pulley/Sprocket. The Closer you Get to Using a Pulley/Sprocket on the Transaxle that is the Same Size as the Engine Pulley/Sprocket, the Faster the Ground Speed. 2- You can Increase the Engine RPMs by Bending the Governor Control Spring Tab at the Throttle Control Bracket to Tighten the Spring Pull or you can Shorten the Spring. QUESTION: Hi John,

I figure there are a couple of ways to setup the rear end. 1) I could put universal joints on the ends of transmission axles and add short axle extensions, setting the rear axle up something like a corvette rearend.
2)Use a straight axle with two large same sized sprockets on swing arms. With a straight axle, the transaxle shafts would need to have the same size driven sprockets as the belt driven pulley on the side of the transaxle.

If I increase the size of the pulley on the motor, will this increase ground speed?
I am in the process of gathering information for a early summer project right now. The fun part will be building a frame for this creation, not to mention gathering steal for the project.

Thank you for your time and help,
Darrell

Answer
Hi Darrell:

Yes, you can Put a Larger Pulley on the Engine First if you Wish. It Does Not Matter Which Pulley you Start with, Just Remember that at Some Point you will Start Losing Pulling Power. If the Transaxle Pulley is Smaller than the Engine Pulley, then the Ground Speed will Increase. Good Luck on this Project.
