Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Testing coil for 13hp Honda, honda engine, volts

Question
I have a GX390 Honda which is only a year old. I've installed it on a 1967 110 John Deere. It quit running and during my checks i found that it had no spark. I just replaced the coil, and still no spark. I have 11.9 volts at the primary side during cranking. What else should I check.

Answer
Dear Butch,

You say that you have 11.9 volts at the primary side but there is still no spark.  I have noticed in one of my manuals the tip: 'Ignition systems are designed to operate efficiently with specifically designed components and should not be altered."  My guess is that matching a GX390 Honda engine on to a 1967 110 J Deere might be problematic.
