Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): tecumseh, coleman powermate, oil sending unit

Question
my dad has a Coleman powermate 5000 generator with a tecumseh 10 hp engine that has been a pain since day one, most recently during our ice storm here in Oklahoma it ran for about two days just fine then suddenly would not continue running,  oil is fine etc,  took carb off seems fine,  will start and run for two minutes then just quit, over and over  like someone reaches over and turns the switch off.  Is there a thermolimiter switch that could be malfunctioning making as if it were over heating? where is the oil sending switch and could that be malfunctioning giving the signal of low oil inaccurately??

This sounds like the low oil switch is giving you the problem. Make sure the oil is full and if it is check the oil sending unit it is located by the bottom of the engine near the oil fill it should have 2 wires to it. Try unhooking it and see what happens,If the engine still quits the hook up the 2 wires together and start the engine. This should solve the problem until you get a new sending unit. We are a Coleman dealer so if you need a part let me know.
