UK Car Repair: gearbox vectra

Question
hi, i started my vectra 2.0 thismorning, i put it in reverse, i reversed out of my space fine, when i put it in first gear and went to pull off i felt a clunk, so pushed the clutch straight back down and tried again this time it was like i had the handbreak on, when it did get it moving it sounded like i had put a load of bearings in the gearbox and they were ratling around please can you help thanks

Answer
Sounds like bearing failure of input or output shaft.

if you get lots of vibration at the gearstick/clutch pedal its input shaft bearings. if the vibration is absent in neutral then most likely output shaft bearings or differential failure.

try rolling the car in neutral with engine off, if theres noise like this its the diff.
