Subject   1999 Scott S1742 Lawn Tractor Transaxle
Question   First, let me thank you ahead of time for your help.  I am having trouble with third gear on the transaxle.  It has always seems to hesitate when I shift to third and let off the clutch but now it doesn't seem to want to engage at all or at times will hesitate for 15 to 20 seconds before moving.  It will not pull itself up any type hill over a couple degrees of grade.  Is this a clutch slipping, possibly in need of transmission fluid (lubricant)  or a more serious problem, in your opinion.

Answer   Hello Don:

Is the Transaxle Pulling Good in the Other Gears? Is the Belt in Good Shape and Not Stretched? Is the Idler Arm Bracke Moving Freely? Does the Extension Spring Attached to the Idler Arm Bracket have Good Tension? On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You. Have a Happy Holiday Season. Thanks.

John, I tried to get back to you before the time expired on the reply but couldn't get in.

The transaxle description is:  Apicer  model 4360 134 s/n 002925.

All the arm bracket, spring and tensioning equipment seem to be in good shape and working properly.  No, it does hesitate or fail to pull in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears.

The V-belt is old and cracked but doesn't seem tobe streched.  It may be slipping but I can't really tell.  I had thought about putting belt dressing on it to see if that would help. I thought that would be a way I could tell it was the belt.

Any help or suggestions you could make would be a hugh help.

Answer
Hello Again Don:

Sorry for the Problems Getting Back to me. The Site Allows me to Answer 15 Questions a Day and Sometimes I get All the Questions Allowed within 10 to 15 Minutes After the Start Time for my New Day (8PM EST). You can View a Breakdown of the Transaxle at this Site Addy; http://www.m-and-d.com/dana_foote_parts.html and Scroll Down to the View Dana/Foote Parts Diagram Window. Now Scroll in this Window to your Model (4630-134) Transaxle. Click and Download the Breakdown for Online Viewing. If the Bracket and Other Linkage are Good and the Spring has Good Tension, then Replace the Belt. The Breakdown of this Transaxle shows that Any Hesitation like you Described can Not Come from the Transaxle. If the Transaxle were the Cause, then this Would Happen when you are Operating this Mower. Example: you are Mowing and Every so Often the Mower Stops for 10 to 20 Seconds, then Grabs and Goes Again. The Problem is in the Belt or the Linkage Binding. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (S1742) and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
