Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): backfiring, 6 digits, 4 digits

Question
QUESTION: I just purchased a brand new engine from briggs. model no. 441777
0428E1
050719YG
I had a hard time with the wiring diagram as the wires on the new engine were different from the old. It backfired several times in the first half hr of running and was wondering if you could tell me why. Thank you.

ANSWER: Hello Cherith:

On New Engines, for the First 5 Hours of Run Time; they May Backfire, Surge or Stall Out a Few Times. Usually this is Caused by; 1- Small Amount of Water in the Gas. 2- The Valves are Seating in. 3- The Carburetor May be Slightly Out of Adjustment or there is a Slight Restriction of the Primary Jet. If the Backfiring Does Not Stop After 4 to 5 Hours of Operation or it Becomes Severe, then Return the Engine to the Dealer and Explain the Problem. It Should be Covered Under the Warranty. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: It is running fine. I ran it for 15 minutes today and didn't have any trouble with it but I am trying to hook up an hour meter to it and I'm not sure what to wire it to. I tried the starter but that didn't work. If you could help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks

Answer
Hello Again Cherith:

Send me the Make and Model of the Hour Meter, Please. There are Several Types and Brands and they Each Hook Up Differently. Most Hour Meters for Small Engines Hook to a Lead at the Ign Switch that is Hot Only when the Ign is in the Run Position. Thanks.
