Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower, sears craftsman lawn tractor, craftsman lawn tractor

Question
QUESTION: Hi.  I have a Sears Craftsman lawn tractor.  When I push the lever for the blades, the engine shuts off.  The engine otherwise starts fine and runs fine.  It just won't continue running when I try to engage the blades, no matter how slowly or quickly I move the lever.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

ANSWER: Hello Lisa:

The Most Common Cause for this Problem is the Seat Safety Switch. Check the Seat Safety Switch. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING THE SAFETY SWITCHES IS JUST THAT!!! FOR CHECKING ONLY. I NEVER Suggest a Mower be Operated with a Safety Device or Switch Disconnected or Bypassed. Now. On Some Model Mowers you can Simply Unplug the Safety Switch from the Harness. On Other Models you have to Place a Jumper Wire Between the Harness Terminals (on the 4 Post Switch Jumper from Same Color Wire to Same Color Wire). The Seat Safety is Showing No One is Seating in the Seat when the Clutch or Blades are Engaged. Go to this Site Addy, http://www3.sears.com/ and Enter the Model Numbers in the Upper Left Search Box and Click Go. Then Visually Verify the Equipment and Click Continue. From this Page you can View Diagrams or Parts Lists for you Equipment. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. QUESTION: Hi John.  I found the switch on the diagram, and disconnected it.  The tractor started, but would only run when the pedal was pressed all the way down; otherwise, it stalled.  I reconnected the switch, and tried again.  That worked!  So far, so good - no problems!  I guess the switch was loose or is going bad?  In that it is so close to the gas area, is there anything about this potentially faulty switch that will present a fire hazard?  Thank you.  And thanks for getting it going!

Answer
Hi Lisa:

It Sounds like the Connection was Corroded and Disconnecting and Reconnecting the Switch Cleaned the Connection. There is No Fire Hazard from the Switch. You are Very Wekcome.
