Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere lx176 kawasaki 14hp, john deere lx176, twin cylinder engines

Question
Hi John
I need to replace the crankcase cover and head gasket.  Do you know what the torque specs are for both and if there is a sequence for them?  Also do you use something with the gaskets to help seal?  I believe I will have to adjust the valves when I get done.  Do you know the valve clearances and how to adjust them?
Thank You Jim

Answer
Hello Jim:

The Crankcase Cover Gasket would be the Sump/Oil Pan Gasket. I Use Indian Head Gasket Sealer on the Sump/Oil Pan Gasket (the Sump/Oil Pan Side Only). You can View the Torque Specifications and Valve Specifications for this ENgine at this Site Addy; http://www.johnfvining.com/engine_specs/default.asp Scroll Down to Kawasaki Engines and Select the Torque Specifications you Wish to View. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms will have Play in them when the Engine is at TDC) When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance and the Exhaust Clearance to the Specifications in the Chart I Provided. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
