Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton (Intek) suspect water in carb, carburetor body, briggs stratton

Question
QUESTION: I have a problem with the engine cutting out. Initially it runs for a few moments from cold start, and cuts ok at full power for about 3-5mins, then dies. Starts again with full choke and will continue with full or half choke but only at half throttle. Once we apply full throttle it stalls. It seemed to only begin doing this once I filled up with gas from our local country gas station. I suspect it could it could have been water in the fuel as it was running fine. So I have drained the float bowl and tank completely and filled with fresh gas (from another gas station).

Engine is B&S 20Hp Model 407777 type 0128 E1.

ANSWER: Hello Neville:

You May have to Remove the Carburetor and Use Compressed Air to Blow the Water Out of the Internal Passages and the Jet. The Visicosity of Water is Heavier than Gas and Sometimes will Not Draw through the Jet. When this Happens the Water Restricts the Jet and the Engine Will Not Start. If After Draining the Bowl and Tank; the Engine Still Operates the Same, then  Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl, Float Pin, Float and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Hi John, Many thanks for your advice. Apparently Gunk is only available from a one supplier here so I will hopefully be able to get hold of some tomorrow.  I have tried removing the float bowl, float and pin but not the needle valves and then spaying everything using aerosol carb sprays but to no avail.  What are the welch plugs you refer to? And the two needle valves seem to be fixed should i remove these and or dismantle the carb any further?

Answer
Hello Again Neville:

This Model Carburetor Does Not have the Welch Plug. You have Disassembled this Carburetor Plenty for Cleaning. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Spray Carburetor Cleaners Do Not Work Well for Cleaning a Small Engine Carburetor Usually. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
