Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda mower overrevving, engine rpms, flap valve

Question
7yr old Honda HRC215PDA w/GXV140K1 OHV engine suddenly started running at full speed. Could not slow down or shut off with throttle control. Suspect engine governor is problem. How hard is it to repair? Is it worth repairing or should I replace the whole engine?  Thx.

Answer
Hello Tim:

1- First Check the Governor Spring and Ensure that it is Still Attached to the Governor Arm and Throttle Control Bracket and is Not Broken. 2- Check the Bradded Fit on the Throttle Thru Shaft where the Governor Link Attaches. Sometmes this Fit Loosens and the Carburetor Control Valve is Not Operated by the Governor Link. The Throttle Control Valve will Stay Full Open when this Happens. Move the Governor Arm Manually and See if you can Control the Engine RPMs. If you can then the Spring or the Internal Governor is the Problem. 3- Check the Carburetor Throttle Control Valve and Make Sure it is Still Bolted to the Throttle Thru Shaft (the Flap/Valve/Plate that Opens and Closes when the Throttle is Moved) 4- If All of these are Good, then the Internal Governor May be Broken. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram... and Select the Catalog American Honda. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
