Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman DLT-3000 Model #917.275810, twin cylinder engines, craftsman dlt 3000

Question
I've had this mower tractor for over 2 years.  Used it hard commercially for one full season. It has a Briggs and Stratton engine.  Will no longer start without hitching it up to two batteries with jumper cables. Once it runs, it runs fairly well, with some backfiring. Valves move in and out, but obviously has way too much compression.  Desperate for help ASAP because I need it for fall cleanup as this machine is the one with a bagger. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hello Joe:

The Problem you Described is Usually Caused by the Valves Requiring Adjustment. The Compression Release is Not Working Due to the Exhaust Valve being Out of Adjustment. I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms will have Play in them when the Engine is at TDC) When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .004in -.006in and the Exhaust to .008in - .010in. I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings. This has Become a Common Problem on All the OEM OHV Engines. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
