Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replacement pulley, woodruff key, transmission shaft

Question
QUESTION: I hope you can help me out with this one !

I have a Craftsman rototiller model 917.299850 that I replaced the entire transmission assembly on. The new transmission was a direct replacement from Sears. I was just at the final stage of assembling the tiller and found that the input shaft on the transmission that is driven off the engine is a different shape. The old transmission input shaft was a woodruff key and the new one is a 3/4 shaft, basically a round shaft with a big flat spot on it. Therefore I can not install the old woodruff key pulley ( PN 100473M) on the new transmission. I am wondering if this transmission (PN 132724) was used on any later model tillers. If it was, I figure I could just order a pulley for the later model tiller and it would fit the new transmission. I have been in touch with Sears a dozen or more times, but the people answering the phone would probably have a hard time changing a lightbulb - ha!

Anyways hopefully you can help me out and be of assistance. I would hate to think I bought this new transmission for nothing

ANSWER: Hello Mike:

I had the Same Problem with a Sear Portable Compressor. I Required a Belt and had to Purchase 2 Pulleys and the Belt because the Pulleys and Belt for my Model Compressor had a Design Change. I Found this Out when I Ordered the Belt. No One Produced the Belt I Required. Actually the 3/4" Shaft with the FLat is the New Style Transmission Shaft. I Suggest you Order the Pulley that Sears Offers. The Pulley Should Match the New Transmission. I will Research this Later Today and See if I can Locate the Pulley Elsewhere. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: Well, I can't seem to find a replacement pulley anywhere, Sears states that the pulley is no longer available. Any idea where I could look ?

Why would they change the output shaft on the transmission from a woodruff key set up to a flat shaft set up ? Neither pulley is available from what I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated
