Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda engine, engine fires, spec numbers

Question
Brand new Honda 18.5HP engine installed on a 318 JD mower. After a few minute warm up, and mowing for some 10-15 minutes, a puff of black smoke appears and the engine dies. Nothing seems to keep it running. After some 15-30 second wait, the engine fires and runs. After a few more minutes of running perhaps 10-20 minutes, same thing. This goes on and on. Terrane does not seem to matter, hills or level ground. No popping, backfiring, etc, just blows a puff of black smoke then dead.
This is a retrofit engine for the original Onan 18HP engine.
Any Idea of problem?

Answer
Hello Jon:

When this Happens is the Plug Firing? Check the Tank for Trash. Check the Pick Up Tube for Rust Inside the Tube. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Hi Jon:

I Just Read your Post and Wanted you to Know that I Suspect a Bad Coil/Magneto/Ign Module. That was why I Asked about the Plug Firing. Thanks for the Ratings and Comments. Till Next Time. May All Your Mechanical Problems be SMALL ONES and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks Again.
