Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1998 John Deere Sabre Riding Mower hydro, input shaft, jd dealer

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1538    John Deere Sabre Riding Mower . I just got it back from the JD dealer for new belts, drive & deck, rebuilt carb, battery. I asked them to check the trans, and the invoice states ok. When I got it home & tried to mow the lawn I found that it won't pull it self through the grass. On pavement it's fine. Except when I turn the front wheels in reverse. When I do that it stops. Any ideas?? Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

You Lost me. Turning the Front Wheels in Reverse? Can you Explain this Statement, Please. Usually the Problem you Described is a Worn Motion Drive Belt Slipping or the Shaft Key on the Transaxle Pulley is Damaged and Allowing the Pulley to Slip on the Input Shaft when the Transaxle is Under a Load. Most Likely the Belt is Slipping if this is a Gear Transaxle and Not a Hydro. Is this a Hydro Transaxle or Gear Transaxle? You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers (1538) and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, then I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Sorry for the confusion. What I ment was, when I drive the mower in reverse and turn the front wheels hard to the left or right the mower stops moving. I've tried to adjust the forward / reverse linkage and I found I lose forward speed and gain more reverse. Buy It still stops.
I just had JD replace both belts so I don't think it's the belts. I've got a hydro 1538. If it helps you to have the numbers they are . BM 18488   1538 HYDRO
PIN * GXSABRB012572
I looked at the web sight you mentioned , but I really don't know what I'm looking at. Maybe you can tell me what I need to look at. Thanks. Steve

Answer
Hello Again Steve:

No Worries. You Did Not Say While the Mower was Moving in Reverse. I Took it as you were Turning the Wheels in Reverse. LOL. After Rereading the E-Mail, I See what you Mean. Sorry, My Mistake. Has Anyone Checked the Fluid Level in the Transaxle? Usually the Belt, a Split Pulley, A Sheared Pulley Key or the Axle Shaft Key (or Splines) are Worn. The Axle Shaft Key (Splines)is an Internal Repair. The JD Dealer will have the Required Oil for the Transaxle. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
