Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kholer engien wont run, air mixture, carberator

Question
I have a kholer 16.5 lawn and garden tractor that I have been working on the last few days. At first the tractor wouldnt run and would backfire violently whenever I could get it to run a bit. (keep in mind this all went from zero trouble to lots of trouble without noticeble symptoms like lose of power ect.)it would smoke bad as well, I decided to check out the carborator and clean it. I did so there was no problems with the float needel or seat. I set the pins(needles) back to there respective 1 1/4 out for fuel and 2 1/4 out for air. I still had no luck. I checked out the valves and set them to the specs I found for the particular model I have, intake-.oo8/.010 and Exhaust- .017/.019 and managed to get it going, however. The motor boogs down when i open up the throtel, then after it catches up it reves way to high, I adjusted the carberator either what way and nothing I did seemed to help the problem. It sputters still to. i checked all the spark system and everything seems to be fine. The only thing im unsure of is what the specs are on the points (I would apreatiate to know this as well)other than that I think the spark part of it is fine, I have tried it with or without the air filter to see if its choking it, no change. I checked compression and it has lots. looked at the flyweel key to see if its broken or not inline, everything is fine there. Im just at a loss now as what to do. How can I clear up this problem?

Kohler
Model #-K341A5(s) cant read my own writing but i think its 5
Spec #-7lll1a
Serial #- 09jc3335 08267

I would apretiate any sugestions in helping me get my tractor back up and running.
Thank you in advance and thank you kindly.

Answer
Hello Shawn:

The Carburetor Settings Are Wrong. Follow the Instructions that Pertain to you from the Instructions that Follow: ****All the Carburetor Adjustments are the Same for Lawn Mower and Trimmers. There are Several Location for the Air Mixture Screws. The Idle Air Mixture Screws are Usually Located at the Top of the Carburetor Bowl and the Top of the Carburetor Body. If the Main Air and Idle Air Mixture Screws are Side by Side on the Side of the Carburetor, then the Idle Air is the Farthest from the Engine. The Main Jet Air Mixture Screw is Located in the Bottom of the Carburetor Bowl or Beside the Idle Air Screw on the Side of the Carburetor Body. Some of the Older Model Carburetors have the Main Jet Mixture Screw Straight in from the Top of the Carburetor Body (this is Rare anymore). If you have Cleaned the Carburetor (Disassembled and Soaked Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air and Install a New Kit if Required. Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:  ****Turn the Idle Air and ****Main Air Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Holding the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine. Turn the Main Air Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.****  The Point Set is  Gapped at .020in. If the Point Set is Gapped Improperly, then you will have the Problem you Described. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
