Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): weak spark, interchange, kawasaki

Question
I have a deere LX172 with 14HP 1 cylinder kawasaki. Starter turns well but I get either no spark or a very weak spark.  I have replaced the coil and checked continuity throughout the elcetrical system. The only part that I'm not sure about is the igniter. I'm considering replacing it with a universal igniter to keep costs down.  Any thoughhts on what the problem could be or if universal igniters would work on this mower.

Answer
Hello G:

Save the Old Coil. It is Probably Still Good. Some of the Aftermarket Igniters will Interchange with the JD Igniter. Usually on an Engine with an Igniter; the Igniter is the Cause of Problems with the Plug Firing. Very Seldom Does a Coil that Does Not have the Internal Ign Module/Igniter go Bad. The Ign Module in the Coil Usually is what Goes Bad and then you have to Replace the Coil. If there is an Igniter or a Separate Ign Module, then the Ign Module or the Igniter Goes Bad. Unless a Coil Gets Hot and Short Out; They Do Not Go Bad. The Site I use to Get the Aftermarket Igniter Numbers from is Going through an Upgrade and is Down Now. As Soon as it is Back Up I will Try and Remember to Look Up the Part Number for you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
