Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 20HP Deere L120 Wont start, trickle charger, voltage output

Question
Hi,

I have two issues that I could really use some guidance on.... First off, I was having charging issues where after about 45 minutes of running the battery would be fully drained. So I measured the voltage output at idle and full throttle and I never saw more than 2v at the battery.

I pulled the flywheel to check for rust on the alt. as the tractor was left outside for a week and got wet during a construction project.  It was clean and therefore I will likely replace the regulator if you agree with my conclusion.  Battery does hold a charge when I attach my trickle charger.

But now the engine will not start. I have verified fuel is getting into the cylinder and spark is at both plugs. The flywheel key was re-installed but I can't even get a sputter. I think the timing/compression is off but not sure.

I was going to post a question earlier about the alternator/regulator but wanted to "fix" it myself :)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
DJ

Answer
Hello DJ:

Ok I Read your Last Post First. The Flywheel Nut Was Not Torqued Tight Enough and the Key Sheared when you First Tried to Restart the Engine after Checking for Rust. This Engine May have a Regulator. If it Does, then Check the Voltage from the Alternator to the Regulator. Usually (99.0%) the Regulator is the Component that Goes Bad. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
