Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda crankshaft removal, crankshaft seal, strap wrench

Question
Your help was great on the seal and website.

On the crankshaft removal for Honda GXV140 engine it has the clutch for the blade on the bottom of the engine.  I have removed the engine and can't seem to break loose the bolt on the bottom of the clutch.  I have taken off the starter pull cord and the large nut under it but can't seem to break the bottom bolt loose.  I am guessing there must a way to loosen this bolt to be able to remove the clutch, and once that is removed can see the bad seal that needs replacing.  At first I thought the nut under the pull cord would hold the engine still so I could loosen the bolt on the bottom but no such luck.

Thank You,

Hi Steve:

Boy did that Subject Line have me Fooled. LOL. I was Trying to Think of a "Steve" I had Removing a Crankshaft. You are Simply Replacing the Lower Crankshaft Seal. Retighten the NUT on the Flywheel to 55 to 60 Foot Pounds Torque. I Usually Remove the Coil/Ign Module/Magneto and Use a Strap Wrench to Hold the Flywheel to Loosen the Blade Assembly Bolt in a Pinch. An Old Leather Belt Makes a Good Strap Wrench. Remove the Plug and Drain the Oil from the Engine. Tile the Engine So the Crankshaft is Horizontal. Have Someone Hold the Flywheel with the Strap Wrench and then 1- Using a Drift Punch or an Old 3/8" Bols about 3" Long: Hit the Center of the Blade Bolt. Attach your Wrench to the Blade Bolt and Wearing a Safety Shield, Hit the Wrench a Few Times to Jar the Bolt Loose like an Impact Wrench would do. That was the NO IMPACT Wrench (Electric or Air) way to Loosen and Remove the Blade Bolt. I have had a Few that Even Required Heat before they would Loosen. I Hope this is what you were Asking about. I Suggest you Purchase an Electric Impact from habor Freight (the 12 Volt Impact for Changing Tires Should do for Home or Car). It Requires a Car Battery for Operation, but the Cost (Approx. $30.00us) is Minimum Compared to an Air Compressor and Air Impact. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
