Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Timing, tecumseh engine, cam gear

Question
QUESTION: I have a older tecumseh HS40  55232a.  Serial #8247. I have set the points to .020 and need to know how to set the timing.

ANSWER: Hello Doug:

There are 2 Timings for Small Engines, Both Trimmers and Mowers. 1- The Valve Timing; is Set Internally Using the Crankshaft Gear Mark and the Cam Gear Mark. 2- The Plug Timing; is Set by the Flywheel Key. If the Key is Not Damaged, then the Plug Timing is Correct. For the Plug Timing, if the Flywheel Key is Damaged, it Causes the Plug to Fire at the Wrong Time and the Engine Can Not Run even though there is Fire, Gas and Compression. Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you Also. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: HOW FAR FROM TDC DOES THE PISTON HAVE TO BE TO SET THE TIMING. I HAVE READ FROM .071 TO .060.  DO YOU HAVE THE EXACT DISTANCE.  THE TIMING IS ADJUSTABLE ON THIS ENGINE.

THANK YOU

Answer
Hello Again Doug:

OK. This is One with the Adjustable Point Set Housing. The Point Set Housing is Set at .060in - .075in from TDC. Usually I Set the Housing at .065in. You can Set the Point Set Housing to Any Location Between .060in - .075in and the Engine will Run. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
