Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): timing gear on briggs and stratton, briggs and stratton, old cam

Question
QUESTION: i have a B AND s MOTOR ON A CRAFTSMAN TRACTOR, THE TIMING GEAR I FOUND WAS EXPLODED. I LOOKED UP THE PARTS I NEEDED,AND ORDERED THEM BUT THE NEW CAM DOSNT LOOK LIKE THE OLD CAM.AFTER INSTALLING THE PARTS, BEING CARFUL TO LINE UP THE TIMING MARKS, THE MOTOR BACKFIRES THROUGH THE CARB. IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE CAMS, OR DID I FORGET SOMTHING?

ANSWER: Hello Todd:

Did you Reset the Valve Clearance? A New Cam Requires the Valve Clearance to be Reset. If Not, then the Engine will Backfire. Have you Checked the Flywheel Key for Damage? If the Key was Damaged when the Old Cam Exploded. Send me the Model and Type Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: engine mod # 311707 type 0132. i adjusted the valves and got it started. thanks for the tip. but now it revs extremly high and billows gray blue smoke while the engine runs.   also im puzzled by what made the time gear explode. i found shredded metal in the oil sump , but cant figure where it came from.the metal reminds me of a bearing shield or somthing light like that. got any ideas. maybr i should do a complete teardown? help!

ANSWER: Hello Again Todd:

Did you Replace the Internal Governor that is Positions on the Cam when you Replaced the Cam? The Small Metal Pieces you Described Sound like the Internal Governor Components. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If the Governor Arm was Removed from the Governor Shaft, then the Governor Needs to be Reset. **To Reset the Governor; Loosen the Governor Arm Bolt and Turn the Governor Shaft Clockwise Until it Stops. Using the Governor Arm Hold the Carburetor to Full Throttle. Now with the Shaft Full Clockwise and the Governor Arm and Carburetor Held at Full Throttle, Tighten the Governor Arm Bolt. If the Engine Still Runs Full Throttle, then Reverse the Rotation of the Governor Shaft, but Still Hold the Carburetor at Full Throttle with the Governor Arm. If it Still Runs at Full Throttle, then Check the Internal Governor. ** Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Todd:

Usually you can Change the Engines. If the Hood will Close Once the Twin Cylinder Engine is Installed, you should have No Problems Making this Engine Swap. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
