Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): fuel delivery, electric fuel pump, mr gasket

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a John Deere f910. It has a Onan 20HP engine. The current pulse fuel pump has failed. I removed this unit, and a replacemnt looks to be a pain, only because the third hose (pulse hose) is buried inside the engine housing. I was wondering if I could use a very low pressure electric fuel pump instead. Thanks   Mike...

ANSWER: Hello Mike:

I am in the Foot Hills of West Virginia. Most of the Mowers Around here that Do Not have a Fuel Pump on the Engine have to have a 4 to 6 psi Electric Fuel Pump Installed on them. The Local Automotive Parts Retailer has a "Mr Gasket" Electric Pulse Pump; Part # 12S, for 39.88us. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

QUESTION: John, thank you for your help so far.  I really want to go with an electric fuel pump now. I already have a switched 12 volts that I can tap into, this will only come on when the key is in the on position. I was told somewhere that I need to keep the pressure to as minimal as possible. I guess if its too much I can flood the carbs. Is this correct? What pressure can you recommend? Thanks again

Answer
Hello Again Mike:

7psi is the Maximum Fuel Pressure for Carburetors. Any More than 7psi and the Pressure will Override the Float and Flood the Carburetor and Damage the Float. The "Mr Gasket" Pulse Pump is Regulated to have No More than 7psi and Works Well on the Mowers I have Installed it on. Some of the Mowers have been Using this Electric Fuel Pump for More than 10 Years. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
