Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Adjust valves, engine model type, compression stroke

Question
How do I adjust the valves on a 14.5HP Briggs with overhead valves?

Answer
Rotate the engine by hand to top-dead-center (TDC) on the compression stroke.  Continue to rotate the engine 1/4 inch past TDC on the compression stroke.  I use a straw to feel when the piston reaches TDC the make a 1/4 inch mark on the straw and continue to rotate the engine until the mark is at the top of the spark plug hole.  Finally, set the gap.
I will need the engine model, type and code number to look up your valve gap specs.
