Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere STX 38, toggle switch, john deere stx 38

Question
Hello John,

I have a J.D.STX 38. Serial #100001.  The mower starts but the blades won't engage. I just put a new J.D. toggle switch on it which didn't do the trick. I was told that there is an electric motor that engages the blades which may have gone out, or it may be a safety switch. What do I need to determine what the problem is?

Answer
Hello Riley:

The Most Common Problem with the PTO is the Ground Connection. I have Seen Many PTOs Replaced that were Good, just the Ground Required Cleaning. The Ground is the FIRST Item to Check before Replacing the PTO Itself. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Locate and Clean the Ground Connection. This will Usually Correct the PTO Not Engaging Problem. If Not and you are Sure the Ground Connection is Good and there is Voltage Going to the PTO, then Replace the PTO. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
