Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 48, brass bushings, gear boxes

Question
QUESTION: I am a new owner of 48" bobcat mower which has a peerless transmission 700-042. In the mower's owners manual recomends checking the grease every 500 hours. After removing the six bolts which hold down the top cover I was only able to open it just a few inches. I'm unable to get the cover of the transmission completely off or even put it back on. Any recomendations or suggestions about the transmission would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Check out this link:

My guess is the shifter fan may have come out of the housing.  These gear boxes are pretty durable but the weak point has always been the chain.  Clean the chain and inspect for any cracks in the links.  The chains are pretty cheap so you may want to replace it.  When they break they have a tendancy to get caught in the gears which can lead to cracked casings.

When reassmbling, pay attention to the notches on the brass bushings on the main shaft.  The notches on the bushings fit into the notch on the casing.

Let me know if the link helps.

QUESTION: The information and the link you gave me was very helpful. On another matter with the same mower, would you happen to know any other links or sites were I can get info on the 14 hp Kawasaki FC420v engine on the mower. I'm looking for information on maintenance issues etc.....Thanks again you have already been a big help. Jay m.

Answer
Unfortunately Kawasaki small equipment management has not caught on to the internet revolution...that is there is very little info out there.

I have searched and searched for Kawa info but it is very difficult to find any information on their power equipment.  If you plan on keeping and performaing maintenance I would check ebay for the repair manual.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.
