Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 17hp Model # 311707 - 0132E Motor, dual circuit, battery voltage

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
The motor doesn't seem to be charging the battery very well and the ammeter gauge bounces wildly on the positive side. I'm wondering if the alternator is bad?
Thanks for your help.
Jeff

ANSWER: Hello Jeff:

Use an Voltmeter and Running the Engine at Full Throttle, the Battery Voltage Should Read 12.8VDC - 13.8VDC. If the Voltage is Less, then the Voltage Regulator is Most Likely Bad. Check the Battery for a Dead/Weak Cell. A Dead/Weak Cell will Drain the Battery when the Mower is Not in Use. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. QUESTION: I don't think my motor has a regulator, rather a "Dual Circuit", a diode off one side of the alternator to the battery, the other side feeds the lights. My manual does not list a regulator, and I didn't see one.

Is there another possible cause?
Thanks for your help.
Jeff

Answer
Hello Again Jeff:

If your Engine Does Not have the Regulator, then the Stator/Alternator is Bad. I May have Looked at the Wrong Breakdown. The Battery Voltage Reading will be the Same if the Stator/Alternator is Good.
