Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman II 18hp Riding Mower, crankcase pressure, crankcase breather

Question
I was recently given a Craftsman II 18hp riding mower.  It will start up and run well, however there is one problem.

A large amount of oil is being sprayed up into the air filter area.  It appears that there are two tubes in the air filter area that are blowing air out of the engine, the one on the right side of the mower (when seated) and  all the way forward seems to be the problem.

I fixed this by pulling the air filter and stuffing a rag in the hole --- obviously not the best solution.  The oil spray seems to be more obvious when I turn on the blades.

Could a belt be on backwards?  Should air be blowing OUT of those two holes?

Answer
Hello Chris:

From your Description, it Sounds like the Crankcase Breather/Vent is Not Operating Properly and May Require Cleaning or Replacing. Yes there is Supposed to be Air (Venting the Crankcase) Coming Out of the Tubes. The Crankcase Pressure Increases when a Load (engaging the blades) is Applied to the Engine. Send me the Model and Type Numbers Off the Engine or the Mower Model Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Thanks.
