Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Recommended Replacement engine, shaft length, belt pulley

Question
QUESTION: I have an older Ariens self-propelled mower (911044) that the engine has expired.  The engine is a Tecumseh VLV500003.  Can you recommend a replacement motor?  I am concerned with the shaft length & diameter being of the same dimensions as the original. The local dealer has quoted a price that is nearly the cost of a new mower. The mower is 15+ years old but still performs great.  Thanks for your advice.

ANSWER: Hello Steve:

This is a VLV50-500003 Engine. Usually an Engine of the Same HP manufactured by Briggs, Kohler or Many Other OEMs will Replace Each Other. I Usually Suggest that you Take Measurements of the Shaft Length and Diameter and Send them to Me. With these I ay be Able to Locate a Replacement Engine Model Number for you. Thanks.

QUESTION: John,
Thank you for the prompt reply.  I've measured the shaft at 1" diameter and approximately 2 5/8" length( I will double check when possible).  However it does have grooves cut into a lenght of the shaft when the belt pulley and blade assembly attach.

ANSWER: Hello Again Steve:

Is there 1 Keyway in the Shaft or More than 1? Thanks.

QUESTION: John,
No, there is no keyway but rather "splines" on the shaft.  The shaft length is closer to 2 11/16" in length.  Thanks again for the advice.

Answer
Hi Steve:

According to the Breakdown of this Engine, the Crankshaft is Standard and the Component with the Splines are Part of the Blade Adapter. Any 5.0 to 7.0 HP Engine Should Fit. You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Site Addy; You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Site Addy; http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up.
