Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): gear failure of S1742 Scotts Lawn Tractor, scotts lawn tractor, gear failure

Question
Dear John,

My tractor has been running alright although over time you do feel transmission gear shifting became not as smooth. Now it refuses to work. Regardless you press the clutch or not, you can shift the gear from one position to the other, but you do not actually change the gear apparently, because the engine starts but the tractor would not move. When I put the gear on "N", you cannot push it to move, and you feel that it is engaged. What happened and what can I do?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Answer
Hello Senjie:

From your Description, it Sounds like the Internal Chain has Broken and is Locking the Transaxle. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (S1742) and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the Power Train File. Then Select Transaxle Shaft and Gears File. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
