Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L118, john deere l118, regulator rectifier

Question
QUESTION: The battery goes dead when not in use. Charge the battery or jump it and it starts and runs fine, even charges the battery fine . It has a new voltage regulator, solenoid, key switch and battery. I have checked the resistance between the stator leads and it is 0.3 ohms. Do you have any ideas of what could be draining the battery?  I sure would appreciate any help you could give me to help solve the problem?  Thank You, Russ

ANSWER: Forget about Ohms.  Your stator output should be 30 volts AC or more. Test between the 2 stator leads.  If you have the 30VAC you need a new regulator/rectifier.  Common.

QUESTION: Purhaps I didn't state what I have already done.  After this problem began, I installed a new regulator/rectifier first, this made no difference. I then installed a new solenoid, new key switch and new battery. I still have the same problem.  I appreciate any other ideas. Thank You, Russ

Answer
Test the stator leads.  Like I said, don't check for OHMs check for AC voltage.  The switch and solenoid aren't even in the charging circuit.  Sounds like stator time to me.

If your battery is good and you have a new reg/rect there is nothing left but the stator.
