Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 18 hp Onan carb adjustment, throttle shaft, stop screw

Question
Paul, I'm just finishing up rebuilding an old "Deines" lawnmower and I've run into a problem with the carb adjustment.  I cannot locat the owner's manual and I no idea what to set the 2 carb jets at.  I am using some pieces off of an identical motor and the screws seem to be around 1 and a quarter turns out on the old carb.  I did locate a new gasket set and pulse fuel pump. Any help would really be appreciated.  Thanks, Brian

Answer
Set the jets at 2 to start with.  Run the throttle to wide open and adust the high side until the engine runs smooth.  Then hold the throttle shaft to idle with your hand and adjust the low side until the engine runs as fast as possible.  Then slow the engine down with the idle stop screw.  You may have to repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times.  When you get the idle set right crack the throttle to wide open.  If the engine stumbles turn the low screw out 1/4 turn.
